Wow, it's been quite a while since the last update. Well, I'm still keeping the page up anyway to do shameless plugs for my next game.

The Dominoze Beta is now available at http://www.dominoze.com/beta . Check it out!

Still alive and working on my next game! Visit http://www.dominoze.com  more detail.

I've also updated my e-mail page. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to drop me a line.

If you're reading this now, this is either your first time here, or you were wondering if I would actually keep the page up this long. While most everyone who would ever download Cycles3D has already done so, it doesn't cost a great deal to maintain this site. In addition, I am writing another game to be released in 2008, and I want to direct any infrequent visitors to http://www.gamieon.com for details.

Warning: The following is a Blog

Well folks, it has almost been a whole year since the last update. As you can see, the page is still up, and nobody has taken over the project. According to the stat pages, this site has accumulated over 600,000 hits in the last 14 some-odd months, and the hits keep coming. Now, obviously a number of them are automated web trackers and spiders, and a lot of them are to other pages of mine being hosted. Nonetheless, I just want to say that I'm both amazed and humbled by the attention, and even the occasional e-mail!

Lately, I've been focused on developing a new and totally unrelated game. By lately, I mean the past two years. All I can tell you is that it's a game of my design, with no influence from any movie, and minimal influence from other games. Also, I'm the only developer (part-time at that), so it will be done in about a year and a half. Finally, it is by a huge huge margin, the greatest and most involving game I have ever written. I look forward to sharing it with everyone when it's ready! Sorry, no previews!

One of the reasons for open sourcing Cycles3D was so other developers could pick where I'm leaving off. As mentioned in earlier news, I don't plan to do any further programming on this project. If you would like to be an active developer on this project, please e-mail me at dragonslayer_developer@hotmail.com.

Also a SUSE user who compiled Cycles3D was nice enough to give me a thorough description of how to get the game to work on his system. Here's a link to the information he gave me.

I recently got an e-mail that exposes an issue with linking Cycles3D 1.9. On some machines, append this to the library section of the makefile:

-lGL -lGLU

As you all know, November 5 is election day in America. So, I decided to break protocol for a moment, and provide you all with this small video game to pass the time. I call it:

Space Chads

Cycles3D 1.9 is now available for the Linux platform. Click on the following link to download the source tarball:

cycles3d-1.9.tar.gz

This has been successfully tested on the Redhat 7.x, 8.0 and Debian operating systems. There is also a windows version which you may download by clicking on Cycles3D-1.9.zip, but it is missing a number of features that 1.8.5 has. The contents of both files are protected under the GPL, and are now available on SourceForge.

User News

I am happy to announce that I just played a network Cycles3D game over my home LAN and over the Internet between my Linux and Windows computers. Yes, it has finally happened. I also have GNS working. I just have a few more tweaks for the GNS web server to do. I still have to clean up some code, and finish porting the dedicated server. After that's all done, I'm going through a final rundown of the code and testing, and then I'm releasing all of it. I should have this ready within two weeks from now.

Nothing to report on SourceForge. It's not going up until it's ready.

Hey, I just thought I'd let everyone know that I just played a couple rounds of Cycles3D on Redhat Linux 8.0.....

Your version will come when I get the network code back on it's feet.

Programmer News

The Cycles3D project is now up on SourceForge, but the code and any new releases are not.

I've decided to change the graphics engine to GLUT (Long story short, it makes the game easier to port to Linux and Macintosh) before putting it on SourceForge.

The only other thing I want to do is get GNS working (again). I started GNS again from the ground up and put that package on SourceForge already.

I've decided that I am going to post the Cycles3D source code on SourceForge. My plan is to clean up the code a bit, figure out how I want to store it on CVS, and then put it up. After that, I'm likely going to post these jobs:
  • Provide a Linux port (This could mean integrating the SDL library)
  • Further code cleanup where necessary
  • The opening sequence where everyone gets into their cycles (I have sounds and textures)
  • Fixes in the VRML code regarding loading textures
  • Re-write of the GNS implementation so players can find other players on the Internet.

I will let everyone know as soon as it's up.

In the meantime, feel free to browse my updated personal homepage and look at some pictures I took with the Canon S-30 3.2MP digital camera!

Ok, I have a confession to make. I don't plan any software updates anytime soon. I'm still getting e-mails of support from people; I'm thrilled that the response is still there. I'm going to leave the site up for as long as I can, because the web logs show that people are still downloading the game. I have not proactively gone to gaming websites to let people know of version 1.8.5 (which is old news, but lots of pages have the old version). I probably won't bother, but I could change my mind when Tron 2.0 comes out to try and fill in the "light cycle gap" that Tron 2.0 leaves for us.

I'm starting to wonder if I should open source the code, since I don't plan to do anything with it. I'm already convinced that it's not modular and robust enough for my current programming style that I want to maintain it much further. Besides, though Linux already has glTron for it, I have yet to see a game that parallels the simulation with the movie as close as my game does.

If you are interested in obtaining a copy of the source code, and have the interest to port it to other OS's besides Windows, please e-mail me at dragonslayer_developer@hotmail.com.

I've been extremely busy at my job, so I haven't even touched the game....but something recently happened that made me bolt back to my website and post an update. I just read in PC Gamer that Tron 2.0 is not going to have a multiplayer light cycles game. I don't know if I will get in trouble with a direct citation; so I will paraphrase: The programming team doesn't think they can do it given the constraints of time and technology.

I'm operating under the assumption that at least one hurdle they have is with writing a light cycle game that works fine over the Internet. I played Cycles3D on a LAN with 5 other people; and it worked great; practically real-time. I played Cycles3D with two other people online with 200-300 pings; it worked fine...not great, but fine. My point is, if some guy in college can write a working multiplayer light cycle game out of his apartment, and test it in a small network lab on a campus, then what is stopping these guys?

I therefore decided to write a letter to PC Gamer that basically tugs on their shirt and say "Hey, maybe I can help?" Why did I write PC Gamer and not the company, directly? Two reasons, to be honest: I'm pretty sure the company would dismiss my e-mail promptly; and, it was more fun this way. Maybe they'll post my letter, and I can get a T-Shirt!

In case they don't post it, you can just read it HERE.

I released a new version of Cycles3D v1.8.5 with these features:

  • Fixed bug where computer players don't turn

  • Made it so you have to press 'T' to talk in a game

These were so minor I didn't bother changing the version number. Click on the big "Download v.1.8.5 Now!!!" text to get it.

I fixed some bugs this morning in the release. If you downloaded it last night, please download it again for proper Internet playability. If you are a third party redistro site (like 3dFiles.com), please provide a direct link to the release on my page for at least a couple days as I may iron out other problems.

Well, I've gone as far as I can go as the only person who can test this program. Everything looked good, and I spent the last 20 minutes learning and using NSIS to make an installer. NSIS is most excellent!!

Anyway, I have the release out. I said I would have it on Friday, but I didn't say what time zone! Well, I came through. Download Cycles3D v1.8.5 now! New features include:

  • Light trails can be seen directly overhead

  • Added ability to change light cycle engine and recognizer volume

  • Increased limit of light cycles from 6 to 10 in single-player mode only

  • Fixed the game-finder.

  • You can reverse how the game uses the Y-Axis of the mouse.

  • Made it so the game-finder does not automatically start when you enter the program; rather, when you click on the tab.

  • Your view preference will be preserved after a crash

  • You can change your key commands in the setup executable

...and e-mail me if you have any problems.

As you know, the old Cycles3D host coders.net was abruptly taken away from me. I am spending a lot of time at my job, with Cycles3D, and another special unrelated project, so I don't have time to surf the net and set the old hyperlinks straight. It would be a huge help to me if you find any broken links that should actually go to the Cycles3D website (www.cycles3d.com) and ask the webmaster to correct them.

Estimated date of release is Friday Feb 1.
